Funny French expressions 8/8

Do you want to improve your knowledge of French, speak it like a real native? There’s nothing like knowing a few small, typically French expressions!

Here are 8 expressions, together wirh pictures and examples of how to use them in sentences, in order to help you remember them better:

  •  “To be a wooden tongue”: to speak without saying anything, only superficial, to manipulate…

Example: “All these politicians who always make empty promises to us and try to put us to sleep with their fine words: they are wooden tongues. “

  • ” To have a shot of bar”: to have a sudden, severe stroke of fatigue.

Example: “I’ve been working all day since 4:00 this morning, tonight I’ve cleaned the house again and now I have a big shot of bar: I’m going to bed.»

  • “A story to sleep standing up” : unlikely, hard to believe.

Example: “You tell me that if you are late for school it is because this morning on the way to school you fell into the gutter, then you went home to shower, but you dropped the key to your house in the shower drain and couldn’t get it back because there was an invasion in that pipe. What a story to sleep standing up! I don’t believe you.”

  • “Giving someone a soap”: reprimanding a person. 

Example: “Oh, yeah! Did your brother break your doll again? I’ll give him a soap, he’ll regret it.”

  • “Breaking sugar on someone’s back”: saying bad things about someone who is not there.

Example: “My sister-in-law criticizes everything I do as soon as I’m gone. She keeps breaking sugar on my back. It’s very unpleasant.

  • “Going green”: isolating yourself, moving away from a complicated situation.

Example: “When the tone rose and the tension between my wife and mother became palpable, I preferred to go green: I left the room and went for a walk in the street. “

  • “Deflate”: lose confidence, lack courage when acting.

Example: “He had promised to come and confront the chief with me about our problem, and then at the last minute he deflated. He didn’t have the courage to enter the office. I went there alone.»

  • “It’s a piece of cake”: it’s very easy.

Example: “Do you want me to cook you a Lorraine quiche? Of course, for a French woman, it’s a piece of cake! I’ll do that to you right now.”
